Product and order measurement

WHC (weight and dimensions characteristics) — why are they needed in WMS

The WMS system requires data on the weight and dimensions of the goods to perform a number of operations:

  • calculation of delivery costs,
  • determination of the storage rate,
  • automatic distribution by storage locations (if supported),
  • preliminary selection of containers,
  • calculation of logistics costs,
  • and much more.

How to get WHC

The easiest way is to use a regular ruler and scales.

However, there are also automatic devices that measure the goods and immediately transmit the data to the system. Such solutions are expensive and are justified only with high warehouse turnover. I want to tell you about a simple, cheap and already automated way to get the dimensions of a product or order.

How it works

Instead of a standard ruler, a special one is used, on which barcodes corresponding to the values are applied instead of the usual numbers.

There are three such rulers in total - along the X, Y and Z axes. You put the product in the corner where they converge, scan each side - and get the length, width and height in the system.

It's really simple and looks something like this:

Ready-made solutions can be found on sale, but they are easy to make yourself:
  1. Print the rulers directly inside our WMS,
  2. Cut them out and stick them on the table and wall,
  3. That's it — the device is ready to work.
